Carlisle United: latest on keeper deal and free agent hunt

The Cumbrians have yet to seal a deal for a goalkeeper who has been training with the club.

United expect to complete the signing in due course but the matter is yet to be fully tied up.

It meant teenager Gabe Breeze was again on the bench last night as back-up to Tomas Holy, with Jokull Andresson’s recent shoulder injury leaving Carlisle seeking a more senior alternative in the goalkeeping ranks.

“There’s been a little bit of an issue with the paperwork, but we hope to get it resolved before the next game,” said Simpson.

“We’re just going to have to wait and see on that one but time will tell.”

United’s manager, meanwhile, played down the idea of any other immediate additions.

He is running the rule over another free agent but a deal does not appear imminent.

“We’ve had another player in to train with us, he’s only done one day,” said Simpson.

“If I’m really honest he looks as if he’s going to take a while to get fully fit and up to match speed, so whether that’s too much of a gamble or a wait [we’ll have to see].

“We’re continuing to look, we’re going to keep working. If I’m going to be really honest, the chances are we’re going to have to wait until January for reinforcements to come in.

“But we’re already starting to try and do that. Hopefully we’ll be able to add players to the group who are going to give us a fighting chance of achieving what we want this season.”

Simpson brought in Josh Emmanuel last week, with the defender making his second appearance for the club at Reading in Tuesday night’s 5-1 defeat.
