A squash club from Carlisle recently represented the county at a Regional Championships event in Manchester.

Carlisle Squash Club enjoyed great success in the recent Cumbria County Championships, held in Carlisle on September, 23.

After winning five titles, and boasting four runners-up among 22 total competitors, some members of the club were invited to play at the North West Regional Championships in Manchester on Saturday, October 14.

A Facebook post from the club wrote: "Kitted out in green, we definitely showed everyone that Carlisle had arrived and everyone gave it their all. For most of the kids, it was their first event outside of Cumbria and it was a real insight into where our Squash is.

"Everyone did Carlisle proud and it was a fantastic day of experience gained. Massive thanks to all players and parents for making the journey and getting involved! Roll on the next one."

The event offered an opportunity for players to test themselves in a new environment and gain vital experience playing against other squash players from the North West.

Former WSA professional and England player Victoria Bell, who coaches at Carlisle Squash Club, said:

"This was a little daunting for some having only had one other competitive experience but everyone gave a very good account of themselves.

James Lawson and Curtis Grainger managed to create upsets winning their first games against seeded players being unseeded themselves. James managed to finish 6th and Curtis went on to come 7th. Nathan Sellers managed to get to the final before losing out in an extremely close-fought match to an older number-one seed.

"Neve Runcie competed in the girls under 17 and was up against one of the top England juniors but did herself and us proud to come away with the runners-up trophy.

"A massive well done also goes to the rest of our players, Bodhi McClean, Flynn Sweeney, Finn Gordon, Miles Gordon, Oscar Rubacs, Cillian Sweeney, Connor Ward, and Callum Ward.

"All kids have come away from the event buzzing and super excited to continue progressing with their squash and entering more events."
