Wycombe Wanderers boss Matt Bloomfield admitted they had not planned the Sam Vokes ambush which saw Carlisle United’s Jokull Andresson sent off.

Bloomfield said striker Vokes must simply have come up with the idea during the game.

The Wales international frontman lingered behind Andresson in the 29th minute and then raced back to catch the keeper unawares as he rolled the ball forward.

The resulting challenge from Andresson saw him handle the ball outside the box, the Reading loanee shown a straight red card as Wycombe went on to win 2-0.

“He must have just thought about it during the game,” said Bloomfield of Vokes’ idea.

“We knew they were going to come and slow the game down slightly, and go long on the goal kicks.

“But we hadn’t discussed it before.”

Luke Leahy’s penalty and a Vokes effort saw the Chairboys to victory against Paul Simpson’s side.

Bloomfield was satisfied with what he saw – particularly in the spell when Carlisle had a full XI on the pitch.

“I was pleased with so many elements of our display,” he told the hosts’ official channels.

“The game does change against ten men but against 11 we were very good.

“I was pleased with the variety of our play, the way we passed the ball but also playing into Vokesy and playing in behind.

“We had good quality and intensity behind us.

“The sending-off does change the game slightly but fair play to the boys. The hardest thing in football is to win games and win convincingly.”

Bloomfield said United did make a good fist of things in the second half as they looked for a way back.

“Fair play to Carlisle,” he added. “With ten men, to a man, I thought they were top.

“It was a tough afternoon at times but I was really pleased with the work we did.”

Bloomfield also hailed the man-of-the-match display of veteran ex-Carlisle defender Richard Keogh, who was recalled to the side following an illness suffered by Joe Low.

“With Keysey you’ve got an incredible man to step in,” he said of the 37-year-old.

“The quality and intensity of his defensive display…he’s been unfortunate not to play more, recently.

“The quality and consistency of Joe, Chris [Forino] and Luke means he hasn’t started as many games recently as he would like and we would like.

“But I thought he was very, very good today.”
