Dan Butterworth got his first Carlisle United goal in a heavy reserve defeat for the Blues.

The summer signing hit the Cumbrians' consolation in a 5-1 loss against Middlesbrough.

The behind-closed-doors friendly at the Championship side's Rockliffe training ground saw Carlisle give game time to a number of senior players and youth prospects.

Butterworth was among the first-team players to get 90 minutes along with Jack Ellis, Corey Whelan, Jack Robinson, Alfie McCalmont, Taylor Charters, Jayden Harris and Ryan Edmondson.

Former Blackburn Rovers attacker Butterworth fired home in the 57th minute after a move involving Edmondson, McCalmont and Romeo Park.

That reduced United's arrears to 3-1 after trailing by three at the break, with Boro adding two more to their total later in the game.

Details of the Boro side have not yet been given although the home club did confirm that defender Matt Clarke played in the game - his first appearance for nearly a year after a back injury.

United reported details of the game on their website with the News & Star not permitted to attend the behind-closed-doors game.

Paul Simpson is also next week likely to use the Blues' Fred Conway Cumberland Cup first round trip to Carlisle City as a chance to run the rule over some of his squad players.

United: Breeze, Maddison (O'Brien 46), Ellis, Whelan, Robinson, Park (Swinburn 57), McCalmont, Harris, Charters, Butterworth, Edmondson. Not used: Barry, Hetherington, Allan.
