Carlisle United’s fringe players will get another chance to impress in a behind-closed-doors friendly today.

The latest reserve outing for the Blues will offer members of Paul Simpson’s squad to get more important game time.

Details of the opposition have been kept under wraps by the Cumbrians.

But the afternoon fixture is likely to see players such as Taylor Charters, Jayden Harris, Jack Robinson, Dylan McGeouch, Dan Butterworth, Ryan Edmondson and Jack Ellis the chance to impress.

It will be the third second-string outing in quick succession for the Blues with manager Paul Simpson keen to get as much competitive action into the players as possible.

“It’s a bounce game for the lads who were not involved [on Saturday] to make sure everybody stays up to speed.

“We’ve also got Carlisle City next week in the county cup, so we need to give everybody an opportunity so they’re not going into that cold.”

Simpson said today’s opposition were reluctant to make public the details of the fixture, but he added: “It will be a good fixture for us.

“We’ll also have a group training back at the ground, Gav [Skelton] will take the other group and we all hope they go and do it properly.”

Carlisle’s previous reserve game, a 2-1 defeat at Wigan Athletic in the Central League Cup, saw midfielder Jayden Harris catch the eye with an impressive goal.

Before that United went down to a 3-0 friendly defeat at Blackburn Rovers.

Those involved this afternoon – with some of the Blues’ youth players also set to feature – will hope to stake their claim for involvement in the squad for Saturday’s League One clash at home to Derby County.

The Rams are bringing a sell-out away following to Brunton Park, with a strong home support also expected for the clubs’ first meeting in the league since 1984.
