Shrewsbury Town boss Matt Taylor felt his side’s set-piece shortcomings were the reason they were beaten by Carlisle United.

The visiting head coach felt there was “nothing in the game” otherwise.

But he conceded that the Shrews’ failure to deal with Owen Moxon’s corner, which led to United’s opener, cost them.

“We lost the game in set plays. I think I should be stood here saying we’re pleased with a 0-0 draw, because we didn’t create a huge amount,” he said.

“But I was disappointed to concede the way we did.

“We almost beat ourselves because we didn’t do our jobs properly. At any level of football, set plays are important.

“This league is a really big league in terms of set plays and the outcome they have on games.”

After Tom Bayliss’s own goal, sub Joe Garner clinched Carlisle’s first win of the season.

“It’s difficult when you’re chasing the game and then ultimately we concede in the 96th minute when we’re trying to get ourselves a goal,” added Taylor.

“I felt there wasn’t a lot in the game but they’re obviously a lot happier than we are because they’ve got the three points.

“I was disappointed in the level of performance and the bravery on the ball – it wasn’t as good as we have been.

“We’re a new group but that’s no excuse. I felt the levels we ask the players to get to with and without the ball, we didn’t do well enough.

“We tried to make some changes that would allow us to be positive at the top of the pitch. I think Max [Mata] probably should have scored.

“But I’m extremely disappointed that we’ve lost the game. I just feel that we didn’t silence the crowd.

“We allowed them to build momentum. But we knew that would be the case.”
