Former Carlisle United star Nicky Adams has landed a coaching role.

The ex-Blues winger has joined another of his former clubs, Oldham Athletic, as head coach of the Latics' youth team development squad.

The 36-year-old, who plays for Northern Premier League Premier Division outfit Radcliffe Borough, links up with an Oldham academy set-up headed by former Carlisle player and coach Paul Murray.

Adams said he was delighted to make the move, telling Oldham's website: "It’s great to be back.

"I always thought I might come back to Oldham in some capacity when I left 12 months ago, so to be back as part of the youth team set-up is great.

“I can’t thank Darren [Royle, chief executive], Paul and Phil [Arbelo-Dolan, head of education] enough for the opportunity to coach the young lads."

Academy manager Murray said of Adams' arrival: "We want to have more ex-players involved in the academy, Nicky has played over 500 games, so he ticks that box perfectly.

"Obviously he's a former player too, like myself, so that helps things, he knows the club.

"This is a brilliant move for the club, but also Nicky, in the next step of his career."

Adams will oversee a development squad which competes in the National League Youth Alliance, with players hoping to impress in order to train with Oldham's main youth team.

Nicky was delighted to be back, and is excited by the opportunity of working with young players.

Adams made 69 appearances for United from 2016-18 and was player of the season as they reached the League Two play-offs under Keith Curle in the 2016/17 season.

After spells with Bury and Northampton Town, he joined Oldham in 2021 and made 67 appearances for the Latics.

After stepping out of the professional game last year, he joined ambitious non-league outfit Radcliffe where ex-Blues midfielder Luke Joyce is among his team-mates.

They currently sit top of NPL Premier after winning their opening six league games, including a 4-1 victory at Workington Reds - managed by Adams' ex-Carlisle team-mate Danny Grainger.
