The goalkeeper who spent most of pre-season on trial with Carlisle United has joined a new club.

Goalkeeper Dan Langley, who made a host of summer appearances for Paul Simpson’s side, has signed for Blyth Spartans.

The former Newcastle United keeper, 22, kept a clean sheet on his debut as Blyth defeated Spennymoor Town 2-0 on Monday.

Langley, who was released by Newcastle last season, will compete with another ex-Carlisle man, Alex Mitchell, for the goalkeeping position at Blyth after signing for the National League North club on a non-contract basis.

His team-mates at Blyth include another former Blues player in defender Michael Liddle.

The former Toon prospect was with United from the start of pre-season and featured in friendlies against Annan Athletic, Gretna 2008, Workington Reds, Livingston and Chorley, totting up 254 pre-season minutes for the Cumbrians.

But Simpson decided against offering the keeper a deal.

In the latter stages of pre-season Simpson said he did not feel Langley was going to push Tomas Holy enough.

“He’s been a good personality to have around, he’s done everything right in training, but I just feel as though we need the next stage of a goalkeeper,” Simpson said at the time.

“We need somebody who can really threaten to be a number one.”

Simpson said he had had the option of bringing in Langley as well as another keeper, but wanted to prioritise his finances in other areas.

He later moved for Reading loanee Jokull Andresson to compete with Holy, and the Iceland international was handed his debut in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Port Vale.

Simpson will now decide whether to involve Holy or young Cumbrian Gabe Breeze in today’s Central League Cup reserve game at Wigan Athletic.
