Max Kilsby made his second appearance of the season for Annan Athletic as their tough start to the campaign continued.

The Carlisle United defender got another start for Peter Murphy’s men in their Scottish League One home clash with Montrose.

Left-sided Kilsby, 19, played the full game as Annan went down to a 3-1 defeat at Galabank.

Annan trailed 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Craig Brown, Andrew Steeves and Kane Hester.

Debutant Preston North End loan frontman Finlay Cross-Adair pulled one back but Annan could not avoid a second consecutive league defeat and a sixth straight reverse in all competitions.

Murphy's side, who hit the woodwork twice after the break, remained without some key players to injury.

Next up for Kilsby and Annan in the league is a derby trip to Queen of the South next weekend, after Tuesday's home clash with Stranraer in the SPFL Trust Trophy.

A number of former Carlisle United men were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

Brennan Dickenson opened his goalscoring account for Oldham Athletic in style.

He scored twice, including a 30-yard attempt, in the Latics’ 5-1 thrashing of Aldershot Town in the National League.

They were Dickenson’s first goals for nearly two years, his last coming for Carlisle against Scunthorpe United in September 2021.

Other former Blues had successful debuts in non-league, meanwhile.

Charlie Barnes was named man of the match and set up a goal as Lancaster City claimed a 2-0 opening-day win over Stafford Rangers in Northern Premier League Premier Division, while veteran Simon Grand was on the bench for Lancaster.

In the same league, Nic Bollado scored for FC United of Manchester in their 3-0 win over Worksop Town, the young striker having joined them on loan from Stockport County.

Nathan Thomas scored in his first competitive outing for Marske United, but they went down to a 3-1 home defeat to Ilkeston Town.

A familiar name was on the scoresheet in League One, meanwhile.

Aaron Pressley – son of ex-Carlisle manager Steven – was on target for Stevenage in their 2-0 win over Shrewsbury Town, for whom Morgan Feeney played the full game in defence.

And in League Two there was a winning goal for ex-Blues loan frontman Jamie Proctor.

His late goal gave Barrow a 2-1 comeback win over ten-man Sutton United, for whom Omari Patrick was substituted in the 83rd minute.
