Veteran former Carlisle United defender Simon Grand has a new club at 39.

He has joined Northern Premier League Premier Division outfit Lancaster City.

Grand was with Charnock Richard last season but will now line up with one of Workington Reds' rivals in the 2023/24 season.

He made his debut in Saturday's 3-2 pre-season win at Clitheroe.

Grand, who was with United from 2004-7, told the club website of his move: "I'm at that stage of my career where I want to win things, I want to be successful.

"Speaking to the manager and the ambition of the club and where they want to be, [it was] an easy decision."

Grand's former clubs include Chester, AFC Fylde, Barrow, Fleetwood Town, AFC Telford United, Southport, Northwich Victoria, Morecambe, Grimsby Town and Rochdale.

The vastly-experienced player has also in recent times done some punditry work with BBC Radio Cumbria, including Carlisle's pre-season game at Chorley last month.

He made 49 appearances at Brunton Park, scoring six goals, and was part of the squads that won back-to-back promotions from the Conference to League One under Paul Simpson.

Among his exploits were the goal at Macclesfield Town that sealed Carlisle's place in the 2006 Football League Trophy final.

During that run the cramp-ridden defender also famously netted the penalty that won a 11-10 shoot-out for United at Tranmere Rovers.
