Paul Simpson is hoping for a clean bill of health for Carlisle United’s league opener after some injury and illness issues.

The Blues boss is assessing Callum Guy after he had a bout of tonsilitis earlier this week.

The midfielder, though, trained today, while Jack Robinson is also in full training after illness last weekend.

Dan Butterworth is also back in training after a muscular issue, while Simpson confirmed that new signing Sean Maguire will be in his squad for the Fleetwood Town clash.

He said the striker has trained fully all week and is in impeccable condition.

“He is certainly in the 18, there’s no doubt about that, barring anything between now and the team-sheets going in,” said Simpson of Maguire.

“It’s more a case of whether we manage him for a little bit longer to make sure he’s fully fit, because I want him fit for the season and not just for the first game and then he’s out for a long time because we’ve not managed him right.”

On the availability of certain players for the weekend, Simpson added: “Jack Robinson [who missed last weekend’s friendly against Dundee United] came in on Monday, and he’s trained all week.

“Callum Guy’s missed a few days. We think we caught tonsilitis very early and he got antibiotics, and he’s trained today.

“We just ned to see how Callum is after the session today and how he is tomorrow as to whether he’s got the energy to be available on Saturday.

“Apart from that, Kai Nugent is still a few weeks away [with an ankle injury] that’s taking a little bit longer than we expected, but apart from that everybody’s fit and available.”

That includes attacker Butterworth, who also sat out the Dundee United game.

Simpson gave further details on the painful injury the ex-Blackburn Rovers man suffered in pre-season.

“He was a couple of weeks behind in terms of football but he also got a knee up the backside against Newcastle [Under-21s] at Gateshead which was really painful,” said the manager.

“I think there was probably an underlying issue that he then took into Chorley and he felt it there.

“We’ve now managed that, the medical department has managed that really well, so he’s available.

“It was a dead bum cheek, right underneath the top of his hamstring, and he was in a lot of pain. That was literally 30 seconds after going on the pitch.

“He struggled through it. It woke him up a little bit…

“But he’ll be fine, he’ll get over it and I know he wants to be involved. He’s done a session today, and he’s joining full training tomorrow with us.”

United’s latest signings Luke Plange and Maguire have been involved with the squad all week as they push for places against Fleetwood.

“They’ve settled in really well,” said Simpson.

“Luke trained on Monday with us, and he’s looked really lively over the week.

“Sean has come in and, for a senior player of 29, he’s in good physical shape - the work he’s been doing alone must have been good, because he’s come in and done all the sessions.

“We thought we were going to have to manage him but he’s done all the sessions and he wants to be involved.

“I’ve got to make a call as to whether he’s involved from the start or we just have him off the bench.”
