Jarrad Branthwaite has spoke of his bid to become a regular Premier League starter for Everton this season.

The Cumbrian star is back in pre-season training after his involvement in England Under-21’s European Championship success.

The former Carlisle United defender, from Wigton, has been the subject of transfer speculation this summer.

But the 20-year-old has set out his immediate target of regular action in the top-flight under Sean Dyche.

“I spoke to the manager briefly before the season finished,” Branthwaite told Everton’s official channels.

“For me, I know I need to come in, have a strong pre-season and secure a place for next season.

“I have got the experience I need to come back and get into the team.    Overall, I need to have a strong pre-season and go from there.”

Branthwaite described last season’s loan spell at Dutch club PSV Eindhoven as “really beneficial” and said: “I developed a lot as a person and player.

“It was what I needed to do, to get out, play games and get experience. I think going over there and playing at the standard we did, I achieved what I wanted.”

Branthwaite also described his involvement in the Euros as “brilliant”.

He made his Under-21 debut in the tournament, playing in the 2-0 group stage win over Germany, and was a substitute for England's other games.

He added: “Being around the boys and seeing what it is like to play for England at that level, I really enjoyed my time over the month and to get the win at the end was even better.”

Branthwaite was not involved in Everton’s friendly at Bolton Wanderers last night. The Toffees are next in action against Stoke City on Saturday.
