James Trafford made his Burnley debut two days after completing his multi-million pound move to the Premier League club.

The Cumbrian goalkeeper was handed a start by Clarets boss Vincent Kompany in their pre-season friendly against Belgian side KRC Genk.

Trafford, 20, played the full game as the Premier League new boys went down to a 2-0 defeat.

Greysouthen star Trafford could do little about Genk's goals, scored by Yira Sor early on and Tolu Arokodare.

The England Under-21 keeper will now look to bed in further with the Clarets as they prepare for a further string of games against European opposition.

They take on Benfica on Tuesday, Real Betis on Friday and Mainz next Saturday before their Premier League opener against Trafford's former club Manchester City on August 11.

Kompany, speaking to Burnley's official channels, said he was pleased to introduce Trafford and other new signings into their side at the Cegeka Arena.

And of the Cumbrian, he said: "James is a sound lad.

"He's got a bright future and I think he's going to help us already with his performances soon and hopefully now.

"There's no doubt about his talent and what he can become as a goalkeeper."

Trafford on Thursday completed his move to Turf Moor for a reported £15m which could rise to £19m.

He became Cumbria's most expensive footballer of all time in the wake of his European Under-21 Championships heroics.

Carlisle United are set to benefit through a sell-on percentage, Trafford having left the Blues' academy for Man City aged 11.
