Cumbrian goalkeeping star James Trafford is moving closer to a big-money transfer from Manchester City to Burnley.

Reports today say the England Under-21 keeper from Greysouthen is set to undergo a medical ahead of his switch to the Clarets.

And the report, by Football Insider, also makes a claim about how Trafford's first club Carlisle United will benefit.

They say United have a 15 per cent sell-on clause in the deal which took the keeper from their academy to Man City when Trafford was 11.

The figure has not been confirmed by any of the parties involved, while United could not be contacted for comment today.

If the report's figures are accurate, a move worth an initial £15m would deliver £2.25m to the Blues.

That, though, remains to be seen, with differing reports such as this one in The Sun saying United would only stand to get up to £1m.

Blues officials having recently played down the prospect of a sudden major windfall from any Trafford move.

United's chief executive Nigel Clibbens, speaking at a fans' forum last month, also stressed that such sell-on proceeds typically arrived in instalments and could take a long period of time to arrive in full.

Clibbens said: "On James Trafford, he went around the time of EPPP [the Elite Player Performance Plan], so the deal was determined around that – there are specific rules and percentages on what you get. So we get a small percentage from him.

“Even at big, double-digit millions, it’s not going to help us too much. It would be welcome, and would help with transfer budgets and things like that, but isn’t going to give us a mountain of cash to do everything we’ve talked about."

On the typical structure of such deals, Clibbens added: "You get paid your money when the seller gets paid their money. Say a player is transferred for £20m and it’s paid over four years, you get your instalments over four years.

“So anything we get on that kind of deal might be quite small and a long time in the future."

United also stand to benefit if Dean Henderson completes a permanent, multi-million pound move from Manchester United to Nottingham Forest - but again, Clibbens said such proceeds would not be "transformational" to the Blues.

Trafford was strongly linked with Burnley before the European Under-21 Championships and, after his starring role in England's tournament victory, things now appear to be gathering pace ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

His move to Turf Moor is said to be for £15m rising to £19 with add-ons, though The Sun claim the guaranteed fee is £13m.
