Former Carlisle United star Adam Clayton insists he will relish life in the National League after his latest move.

The experienced midfielder has joined relegated Rochdale on a one-year deal.

It follows his departure from Bradford City following last season's play-off defeat against the Blues.

The 34-year-old has linked up with Dale as they prepare for life in non-league's top tier.

Ex-Blues loan favourite Clayton said he was up for the challenge.

“I grew up locally, so I know who Rochdale are as a club. It wasn’t a case of selling the club, more of selling the aims and ambitions for the group," he said.

“Just by talking to the gaffer you can tell he’s going to give it everything to try and achieve what he wants to achieve.

"What he wants from a midfielder suits me and hopefully we can have a good season together.”

Clayton spent the second half of last season with Bradford after signing from Doncaster Rovers, and was in the Bantams side that fell to Carlisle in the League Two play-off semi-final.

After 16 appearances for the Valley Parade club, he will now play under Jim McNulty at the Crown Oil Arena, Rochdale having finished bottom of the EFL last term.

“The impact of a signing like Adam on our dressing room could be huge," said McNulty on Rochdale's website.

"It raises standards, and culturally will be great for the whole group, including myself.

“His calibre and pedigree speak for themselves."

Clayton was on loan at United from Manchester City in the 2009/10 season, making 36 appearances including his Football League debut, as well as the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final against Southampton at Wembley.
