Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford will put his brilliant clean sheet record on the line tonight as England Under-21s chase further success at the European Championships.

Trafford has yet to concede in three games in the tournament.

And he and his young Lions team-mates will hope to extend that impressive run in today's quarter-final clash with Portugal.

Manchester City keeper Trafford, from Greysouthen, has kept clean sheets in consecutive 2-0 group stage wins over the Czech Republic, Israel and Germany.

The 20-year-old has earned plaudits for his performances, former Carlisle United academy prospect Trafford making important saves in each game.

The young Cumbrian has firmly established himself as the U21s' No1 and he will be out to help Lee Carsley's England reach the Euro semi-finals for the first time since 2017.

Ultimately the young Lions are targeting a first victory in the tournament since 1984, while if they make the final it would be for the first time since 2009.

“We’ve done really well, three wins from three,” Trafford told the BBC. “Everyone has played and we have played how we want to play.

"We have played really well as a team and the performances have shown that.

“We are all positive and got every reason to be positive. We know that we have done our work in the groups, in the knockouts anything can happen – they are one off games. We will focus on Portugal and give it our best shot.”

While England boast a 100 per cent record from the group stage, they take on a Portugal side who won one, drew one and lost one when finishing runners up in their group.

Wolves winger Pedro Neto is among their threats.

Trafford's fellow Cumbrian, defender Jarrad Branthwaite, will be hoping to be involved again after he made his debut in the win over Germany.

The Wigton star had been an unused substitute in the first two group games.

A clean sheet against the Germans has given Carsley some defensive posers, though the head coach may bring back in the likes of Taylor Harwood-Bellis to take on Portugal.

Branthwaite was called up among eight changes for the Germany game at a time England's last-eight place was already secure.

Midfield and attacking stars such as Emile Smith Rowe, Curtis Jones and Anthony Gordon, who were among those rested against Germany, are also expected to come back in.

The game is played at the Ramaz Shengelia Stadium in Kutaisi, Georgia and kick-off is 5pm UK time. It will be live on UEFA’s website.
