Cumbrians Jarrad Branthwaite and James Trafford kept Germany at bay as England Under-21s chalked up another impressive victory.

Defender Branthwaite made his debut for Lee Carsley’s side in their 2-0 victory at the European Championships.

And keeper Trafford kept a third consecutive clean sheet as England progressed to the quarter-finals in Georgia.

It was Wigton star Branthwaite’s first taste of Under-21 action after he had been an unused substitute in England’s first two games – both also 2-0 wins over the Czech Republic and Israel.

Everton’s ex-Carlisle United star was involved in the build-up to the early opening goal by Cameron Archer.

And Manchester City keeper Trafford, from Greysouthen, claimed an assist as he picked out Harvey Elliott with a quick throw as the Liverpool man went on to convert a solo goal midway through the first half.

Germany failed to find a way past England’s defence and Trafford, who is yet to concede in the tournament, saved impressively from Kevin Schade before the break.

It was an overdue Under-21 debut for Branthwaite after he was denied by injury after being called up to the squad in March.

Trafford looks certain to remain in the side for the last eight clash with Portugal on Sunday, while Branthwaite will hope he has done enough to impress Carsley, who mixed things up with eight changes to his side for the final group game with England’s progress already assured.

The Portugal game kicks off at 5pm on Sunday.
