Carlisle United are reportedly interested in signing Halifax Town defender Jesse Debrah on a free transfer this summer.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, the Cumbrians are eyeing up a move for the 22-year-old defender, who is out of contract with the National League side this month, meaning he could arrive at Brunton Park without a transfer fee.

Paul Simpon’s side are yet to make a new signing ahead of the new League One campaign but have already seen the likes of Kristian Dennis, Joel Senior and Jamie Devitt depart.

Nixon suggests that Carlisle are not alone in their interest in Debrah, with several unnamed Scottish and English football league sides also said to be keen.

Despite his age, the centre-back has been a regular for the Yorkshire outfit for each of the past two seasons, making 59 appearances since his arrival from Dulwich Hamlet, contributing three goals.

Although he has no prior football league experience to his name, Debrah could be an eye-catching addition for the future for Simpson’s side, given he was a big part of a defence that conceded just 48 goals in the fifth tier last season - the joint-fifth best record in the division.

The six-foot-three defender could feature alongside Jon Mellish, Morgan Feeney and Paul Huntington for Simpson’s side in League One next season, with the latter one man who may soon need replacing as he approaches his 36th birthday.

With Debrah’s contract set to expire at the end of this month, the Cumbrians are free to make the 22-year-old an offer and Simpson’s desire for new signings suggests that an offer could soon be put on the table.

The 56-year-old has previously stressed that new faces will be vital if Carlisle are to achieve their goal of remaining in the third tier next year and Debrah certainly won’t be the last name to be linked with the Blues as the summer transfer window edges closer.
