Bradford City boss Mark Hughes believes the experience of his former Carlisle United stars can be crucial in the play-off second leg.

Hughes highlighted midfield men Adam Clayton and Alex Gilliead among the key players in the Bantams’ 1-0 first-leg win over the Blues.

And he suggested their know-how, along with that of captain Richie Smallwood, will be important to Bradford’s aim to complete the job at Brunton Park on Saturday.

Both Clayton and Gilliead had previous loan spells with the Blues while Bradford’s attack is spearheaded by another ex-United man in Andy Cook.

Hughes, speaking about their impact at Valley Parade on Sunday, said: “We needed the leadership out there – the likes of Adam Clayton, Richie Smallwood and Alex Gilliead, who I thought was excellent.

“He showed huge energy and he put in a huge amount of exertion on his body.

“Credit to him, but right through the team, I thought we had the right resolve and understanding of what we required.

"We are going to need guys with that experience and clear minds. Guys that don't get wrapped up in the emotion of it.

“You have just got to keep a clear head and make sure you do the right things under pressure. If you do that and think clearly - and you don't have the throwing teacups scenario, you have got a chance.”

Hughes, meanwhile, believes his side are capable of recovering well from their first leg exertions.

He is now formulating a game plan for the game at Brunton Park where a draw would be enough to see Bradford at Wembley – as would a first Bantams win at Carlisle’s ground sine 1985.

"It was a huge effort from the guys, to navigate yourself through 46 games and then go again,” added Hughes.

“We are in good nick at the moment and have good recovery strategies for what we do.

“We do that correctly and get people out so we can go again.

“We will look at elements we did well and didn't do quite as well and then a game plan into [Saturday].”
