There were milestones, goals and impressive victories for some of Carlisle United’s young players this weekend.

Teenage midfielder Kai Nugent enjoyed the landmark of his first goal in senior football for Workington Reds.

The Carlisle youth player was on target in Reds’ emphatic 5-0 home victory over Witton Albion.

Nugent hit promotion-chasing Workington’s third goal on the hour, volleying home from the edge of the box in an NPL West game when former Blues man David Symington hit Reds’ other four.

Manager Danny Grainger was delighted with Nugent and, in a pot-match club interview, said: “He took his goal well.

“I’m delighted for Kai. He’s been fantastic since he came in on loan.

“He played in a slightly different role in the centre of midfield, but I thought he was tremendous.”

Teenage striker Sam Fishburn was also on target as Morpeth Town recorded an impressive win.

The young Blues frontman, promoted to the starting line-up, hit the opener in a 2-1 win at promotion-chasing Hyde United.

Fishburn got the better of his defender in a chase for the ball before slotting home from the edge of the box.

Matty Cornish later his a winner for the Highwaymen, who sit 16th in the table.

North of the border, meanwhile, defender Max Kilsby helped Annan Athletic to a highly impressive home win over second-placed Dumbarton in Scottish League Two.

Peter Murphy’s side prevailed 3-1 at Galabank with Kilsby playing the full game.

The young Blues man started at left-back and was involved in Annan’s third goal in the 27th minute, his shot parried into the path of Tony Wallace to score.

Kilsby then moved inside to a left-sided central defensive role as Dumbarton snatched a consolation goal through David Wilson amid an excellent showing from the hosts, whose other goals came from veteran Willie Gibson and a Martin McNiff own-goal.

It was Kilsby’s 30th appearance for Murphy’s side, who are now two points clear in third place in the battle to secure a play-off place.

United winger Lewis Bell was also in action in Scotland with his latest start for Gretna 2008, but they went down 3-0 at Gala Fairydean.

Gretna remain 17th in the Lowland League table.

Youth player Dan Hill got another start for Cleator Moor Celtic in their North West Counties First Division North trip to South Liverpool on Saturday.

The west Cumbrians went down to a 2-0 defeat on Merseyside.
