Tickets for Carlisle United's trip to face Cumbrian rivals Barrow have sold out in less than three hours.

The Blues' allocation of 640 tickets for the game at Holker Street were quickly snapped up after going on sale this morning.

United put the tickets on sale to season ticket holders from 10am and announced that they had all been bought before 1pm.

There was intense demand for the tickets with many fans facing long queues on the telephone lines at Brunton Park.

A number of supporters expressed frustration at the process, with United issuing a message advising that the phone queue had a limit, and urging fans to keep trying.

After confirming the sell-out, the Blues also issued a warning to United supporters trying to get in the home sections of Holker Street.

"Any of our fans who are purchasing tickets in home areas of Barrow's stadium will have their ticket cancelled," they said.

Carlisle had announced details of the ticket sales on Sunday, with the priority period limiting season ticket holders to purchase one ticket for their own use.

Members including CUOSC and current Flexi-Card holders were due to get the next priority on Wednesday with general sale on Thursday - but the season-ticket holder demand meant all tickets went well before then.

The sell-out away support sets up a big occasion at Barrow's So Legal Stadium on what could be a pivotal weekend in the League Two season.

The game on Saturday, April 22 is United's penultimate away fixture of the campaign.

The Blues will be hoping still to be in the automatic promotion race by then, while the Bluebirds are trying to keep their play-off hopes alive.

It will be a second trip to Holker Street for Carlisle this season, Paul Simpson's United having lost 2-0 to Pete Wild's side in the Papa John's Trophy in October.

That game also saw a home supporter throw a firework into the United penalty area, leading the game to be held up as an arrest was made.

The clubs' meeting at Brunton Park in the league this season saw Carlisle thrash Barrow 5-1 on January 31.

United are currently fourth in the table with Barrow ninth.

Last season's trip to Holker Street was a memorable away-day for the Blues and their sell-out away support, as a 2-1 win helped Simpson's side on the way to securing safety.
