Former Carlisle United favourite Tom Cowan is getting his boots back on - in memory of Lee Rigby.

The promotion-winning defender is to play in the Lee Rigby Memorial Cup at Gigg Lane in Bury this summer.

Cowan will join a host of former Rangers players who will take on a north west 'superstars' team.

The game is in support of the Lee Rigby Foundation, in memory of the soldier who was murdered in London in 2013.

It marks the tenth anniversary of the Fusilier's death.

Cowan, 53, who was at Rangers from 1989-91 before later playing for Carlisle from 2003-5, will line up alongside ex-Ibrox stars such as Mark Hateley, Trevor Steven, Marco Negri, Jimmy Nicholl, Alex Rae, Marvin Andrews and Michael Mols.

The foundation set up by Lee Rigby's parents Lyn and Ian, after the loss of their son, aims to support other families in similar need of support.

Liam Howarth, who is involved with the Lee Rigby Foundation, told the Bury Times that the charity game on Saturday, June 24. was intended to be a big event to mark the tenth anniversary of Lee's passing.

“It is going to be great for the foundation, the town and Gigg Lane," he said

“It will be sad, as it always is around that time of year but it is something to celebrate in memory of Lee's life.”
