Carlisle United’s manager and chief executive have saluted the “absolutely brilliant” teenage fans who have been painting the Warwick Road End.

A group of young supporters have spent all week sprucing up Brunton Park’s home terrace.

They have given up their half-term holiday to brighten up the Warwick in an initiative backed by the club, fan groups and local businesses.

United’s chief exec Nigel Clibbens and boss Paul Simpson have now praised the supporters for their work.

“For these young fans to step up and do this themselves, come in and give up their school holidays, is simply brilliant,” said Clibbens.

“They deserve huge credit and thanks. They are really proud of what they have done and so they should be – it looks great.

“I can’t wait to see the reaction of the fans when they see the work that’s been done.

“We had a great chat together today talking about it and what they want to do next in the Warwick.

“We will be delighted to continue to help and support their ideas…so watch this space!”

The young fans have been painting the grey crush barriers blue in the Warwick, as well as applying coats of blue paint to breezeblocks walls.

They have done so with the support of local business Paintwell, who have provided the paint, other materials and advice.

Manager Simpson, along with United captain Morgan Feeney and striker Kristian Dennis, met the fans as they worked on the terrace this week.

Simpson said the teenagers deserve nothing but praise.

“It’s absolutely brilliant. Credit to them,” said Simpson.

“I think young people nowadays get a lot of stick – everybody wants to tell us what they’re not doing right and what they’re doing wrong.

“These fellas have come out, off their own back, and taken it upon themselves to do this.

“I tell you what, they aren’t half making it look smart as well. They’ve done a really good job.

“What I would say is I hope when we play our next home game I can’t see any of the barriers because it’s full.

“But they’ve done a brilliant job. I went over on Tuesday with Morgan and Denno to have a chat to them.

“One of them I noticed had painted a blue moustache on himself. Hopefully they’ve got more paint on the railings than each other over the rest of the week…”

The fan-led initiative has been another example of how United supporters have rallied to the cause as Simpson and the team turned their fortunes around.

The Blues boss hopes the positive vibes can continue.

“I think it shows they’re all out there,” he added.

“We have an incredible fanbase. For whatever’s gone on, whatever the reasons, they’d lost faith in the club, lost the affinity they’ve got with the club.

“That’s come back now. That’s shown in the numbers we get at home, that we have travelling away, the numbers we’re generating in the club shop with sales, the amount of people in the hospitality rooms.

“Credit to the club as well, they’ve tidied up [areas like] the 74/75 Lounge, Murphy’s Bar, the Glass bar, Foxy’s…all these places, we’re providing a really good service for them and people are enjoying coming along for it.

“We have to keep doing it. I’m fully aware if we don’t carry on winning games of football it will start to wane a bit so we have to make sure we do everything we possibly can to win games of football.

“To do that you’ve got to keep evolving and improving the squad. If we can keep doing that then hopefully all the rest of the things will keep snowballing.”

The fans involved in the painting work this week are Harry Crook, Kyle Douglas, Sonny Kirkwood, Ben Wilkinson, Caden Corrigan, Shaun Petry, Sam Davidson, Jay Mackay, Callum Conley, Jamie Mulholland, Gabriel Timperon, Amos Bulman, Finnon Tobin and Kian Storey.
