Paul Simpson says Jack Robinson made a positive first impression in a Carlisle United shirt despite the heavy defeat to Mansfield.

The Middlesbrough loan defender came off the bench in the second half of Tuesday’s 4-0 defeat.

It was far from ideal circumstances for the January signing to make his first Blues outing.

But manager Simpson said it was still worthwhile introducing the 21-year-old.

“It gave us a chance to have a look at him,” said the Carlisle boss.

“I said to him that it was unfortunate, and not the circumstances you would want to go on.

“But it was a case of just getting him out there.

“I think he showed that he had a desire to get crosses in, and he looks like a good physical presence.”

Robinson has had to be patient for his chance given the form of Jack Armer in United’s left wing-back position.

The Boro prospect will now hope for further involvement when Carlisle take on Colchester United this weekend.

Simpson says a sense of unity is needed to deal with Tuesday’s heavy home defeat and move on to better things.

“There was a lot of disappointment but I trust them to be able to go again,” he said.

“I trust them to be able to lift each other and hopefully that will come this weekend.

“This is where we've all got to stick together.

“The staff will support the players, hopefully the players will support each other and hopefully the supporters will come and keep supporting.”
