Paul Simpson says Carlisle United are undaunted by the heavy spell of travelling now facing the Blues.

The Cumbrians kick off a period of long away trips with the journey to AFC Wimbledon this weekend.

It is the first in a series of southern away fixtures which also sees United head to Crawley Town, Swindon Town, Gillingham and Leyton Orient in the coming weeks.

With a rearranged trip to Bradford City also on the calendar, Carlisle will cover 3,371 miles in the space of 50 days between Saturday and April 1 – some 35 per cent of all their League Two travelling over the 2022/23 season.

Manager Simpson, though, says United will make no complaints about all the motorway miles as his side aims to make the most of their promotion chance.

They head to Wimbledon - and a first-ever game for the Blues at the Cherry Red Records Stadium at Plough Lane which opened in 2020 - third in League Two and with a strong away record so far.

“At the start of the season when you're Carlisle United you know you've got some long trips, so we're not surprised at it,” said Simpson of the spell of travelling ahead.

“We knew this is what it is and we're ready for it. There's no complaints.

“We've got a lovely coach we travel on, we stay in nice hotels. The players get looked after properly and we've just got to make sure the preparation leading up to that is right.

“We get the travel right. We can't do anything about the traffic – it'll be what it will be – and London hasn't got any closer and we will deal with it.

“It's fine. It's not a problem at all when you're at Carlisle United. That's part and parcel of being here.”

Carlisle will be hoping to bounce back from last weekend’s home defeat to Harrogate Town when they take on Johnnie Jackson’s 13th-placed Dons.

Simpson has been checking on the fitness of midfield star Owen Moxon after he was substituted with a dead leg in the 1-0 loss to Harrogate.

Omari Patrick, who took a whack on his ankle in a challenge from Kayne Ramsay – who subsequently suffered facial injuries that have ended his season – will also hopefully be able to continue unscathed.

Carlisle are one point above Northampton Town as they bid to strengthen their hold on third place this weekend.

They will do so against a Dons side with designs on a play-off run. The hosts are in mid-table and unbeaten in their last four at home.

Simpson, whose side have won six and drawn four of their 14 games on the road, added: “It’s a long journey down there, but it’s a game we’re looking forward to.

“I’ve never been to this ground so it’s another one of the 92 that I can tick off.

“It’s a game we’ve got to be up for. It’ll be tough one, but we’ll be ready for it and hopefully we’ll put on a performance that gets us a result.”
