Former Carlisle United defender Rhys Bennett has signed for today's opponents Rochdale.

But the centre-half has not joined them in time to play against the Blues today.

Bennett, 31, has rejoined the club for whom he played from 2012-16.

He will bolster Jim Bentley's squad as they bid to beat the drop.

Bennett had been without a club since leaving Morecambe last summer.

He has now linked up with League Two's bottom club until the end of the season.

Bennett, speaking on Dale's website, said of his move: “It’s really nice to be back.

“Walking through the stadium, it only feels like yesterday since I left!

“There’s been interest since the summer, and I just felt like now is the right time. I just want to play football. I’ve seen the situation that the club is in, and I just want to help.

“I think we all know what the goal is. I’ll give everything on the pitch, and around the club, to achieve that.”

Manager Bentley described him as a "good, experienced player at this level."

“He has been training at a League One club, so he is fit and ready to go. With his knowledge, knowhow, and skillset, I am sure he will improve the squad," he added.

Rochdale confirmed Bennett is not eligible for today's Carlisle United but will be available to make his debut away to Salford City next weekend.

Bennett played for United in the 2020/21 season under Chris Beech, making 26 appearances and scoring five goals.
