Carlisle United's top performers and how they compare in League Two

There have been plaudits for players such as Owen Moxon along the first half of a promising campaign.

We took a look at how leading football data website WhoScored.com – whose match ratings help form the official EFL teams of the week – to see where Carlisle’s players rank among all their League Two peers, of those who have played 13 games or more.

1 OWEN MOXON

Statistically League Two’s leading player so far in 2022/23. The Denton Holme midfielder has an overall rating on WhoScore.com of 7.49, putting him ahead of the likes of Stevenage’s Carl Piergianni, Northampton Town’s Sam Hoskins and Harrogate Town’s Luke Armstrong. Moxon, in 24 league appearances and 2,044 minutes, has scored four goals, contributes seven assists and been star man in seven games. Outstanding stuff.

24 PAUL HUNTINGTON

Moxon’s fellow Carlisle-born player Huntington is Carlisle’s second highest-rated player. The centre-back, from 21 appearances, has an average rating of 6.98, with his average successful aerial challenges per game of five a strong feature of his statistics.

Next for the Blues is hard-working midfielder Callum Guy, who has started 24 of United’s 25 league games. His average tackle count of 2.5 is strong amid the data that gives him an average rating of 6.85.

Carlisle’s fourth highest performer, according to WhoScored, is captain Feeney, whose 17 league outings yield an average rating of 6.84. He scores well with an average of 1.4 interceptions and 2.5 clearances from the heart of the Blues’ defence.

Wing-back Armer is United’s only outfield ever-present in the league, and he scores well on WhoScored.com with an average mark of 6.82. Armer’s five assists are notable as well as some consistent scoring in a number of other areas.

90 JON MELLISH

Mr Versatile, Jon Mellish, is next for the Blues. The defender-cum-midfielder is in the mix with an average of 3.5 clearances as well as 1.8 tackles, helping earn him an average score of 6.79.

The Nottingham Forest loanee, who is currently out injured, earned an average rating of 6.78 from his 17 appearances in United’s League Two campaign. Two assists, an average of one ‘key pass’ a game and an average tackle count of 2.5 are among his important data.

United’s fox in the box comes in next with an average score of 6.77. His 14 league goals, plus three assists, make him an effective performer for the Blues, while his average shots-per-game tally of two puts him in League Two’s top 20.

Midfileld regular Gibson is next on the chart for the Cumbrians. He has six assists to his name and a high pass success percentage of 76.1, also averaging 1.2 dribbles per game amid an average score of 6.73.

Goalkeeper Holy is United’s tenth highest performing player according to the stats, averaging 6.64. He is United’s other league ever-present, completing all 25 of their games so far, keeping ten clean sheets along the way.

The dependable defensive figure of Corey Whelan comes in next for Carlisle with an average match score of 6.59. The former Liverpool man wins 2.9 aerial battles per game and makes an average of 2.4 clearances.
