Carlisle United fans have been handed a gruelling final day of the season - thanks to the King's coronation.

Blues fans were already facing one of the longest trips of the campaign to Sutton United for their last League Two game of 2022/23.

But now the game has been put back two days - and moved to a 12.30pm kick-off.

It will mean a very early start for Carlisle's loyal travelling supporters to make the 330-mile trip to south London for the game at Gander Green Lane.

The game - which could have dramatic implications on United's promotion challenge - will now be played on Monday, May 8, having been originally scheduled for Saturday, May 6.

It is United's fourth longest trip on the League Two calendar, and it will be the longest journey undertaken by any fourth-tier club on the last day of the campaign.

That Saturday will see King Charles III's coronation, meaning games on that day have now been moved.

Monday, May 8 has been declared a Bank Holiday.

That day will also see the final round of Championship fixtures, at 3pm, while League One's final games will be played on Sunday, May 7 at 12pm.

The new last-day schedule was confirmed after a meeting of the EFL board which includes Carlisle co-owner John Nixon as League Two clubs' representative.

"The confirmed schedule was approved by the EFL board at its recent meeting and follows consultation with stakeholders," a league statement said.
