Cumbrian Premier League prospect Joe White has been praised for a "sensational" loan debut.

The Newcastle United midfielder, who is from Carlisle, came off the bench for Exeter City on Saturday.

And White quickly showed his quality in an impressive cameo during the Grecians' 1-1 draw with Forest Green Rovers.

It was the 20-year-old's first outing after joining the Devon club on loan until the end of the season.

Exeter boss Gary Caldwell was highly impressed with what he saw from White.

"For a debut, he was sensational," said Caldwell, who introduced White in the 61st minute.

“He still has things to learn and he needs to be better at, but he is a player with real quality and we are delighted to have him.

"He is a player I know and the quality he has...we don’t have that kind of midfielder.

"He has a wonderful left foot, and showed a lot of bravery and I was delighted with the contribution from the bench.”

White, who is the grandson of the late former Carlisle United player, coach and physio and Workington Reds manager Peter Hampton, is hoping to gain important first-team experience with Exeter to help push his claims at Newcastle.

It is a second loan move of his career, White having spent time with Hartlepool United last season.

Caldwell, speaking in DevonLive, added: “I am delighted with the contribution and how he was settled into the club as well.

"We have to understand what type of player he is, and we can give it to him in tight areas and he works his way out of it.

“He’s a fantastic dribbler, he has a wonderful left foot for a final pass, cross or shot and he brings a real quality that I think could unlock defences and provide goals and assists in the final third.”

Other young Cumbrians in action included Bolton Wanderers' goalkeeper James Trafford, who kept his seventh clean sheet in eight outings in their 3-0 League One victory over Portsmouth.

The England Under-21 international, from Greysouthen, is on a season-long loan from Manchester City, and has enjoyed 15 shut-outs already this term.

Jarrad Branthwaite, the former Carlisle United defender, got his latest start for PSV Eindhoven.

The Wigton star played the full game as PSV drew 2-2 at Fortuna Sittard to remain fourth in the Dutch Eredivisie.
