PAUL Simpson has issued an update on Carlisle United's potential incomings in the January transfer window.

Carlisle face Crewe Alexandra in their final game of 2022 and their final game before the transfer window re-opens in January.

Ahead of this, the Blues boss has given update on the potential incomings at the club in the first month of 2023.

He said: "The plan is to try and make the squad better, now there is no guarantee that we will, it's a case of looking around and bringing in what we can afford to bring in.

"It's important as we want to stay up in these top places, I think there is gonna be some clubs who are below that fourth place where we are at the moment who will have a real push to try and get themselves up into the top places and we have got to be in a position to withstand that push and even push ourselves higher.

Good progress has already been made towards bringing in reinforcements prior to the opening of the window according to Simpson.

He said: "All I can say is I am much happier with where we are at this point now than I was last June when I felt that we were a bit behind but we are in a good position.

"I think we have done lots of homework and have watched a lot of players. We have made enquiries and we know where we are in terms of the finances for a couple of lads we want to bring in, so the truthful answer is, I am happy with where we are.

"We have had positive responses about the ones we are after."

Simmo also gave an idea of how many incomings could be on their way and when.

He said: "I would like to think that before we play Newport we could have a change to the squad.

"We have to get the right balance. I don't think we are talking about six and seven players, it might be two or three but I do not put a set number on it, its a case of just seeing how it goes."

Carlisle's league position and form has also given the Blues the best chance at bringing players in during January according to Simmo.

He said:" We have given ourselves that chance, we have given ourselves a better bargaining tool by being in the position and the state that the football club is in as well, so hopefully that does work to our advantage.
