Paul Simpson believes there is more to come from Ryan Edmondson now he’s hit the goal trail for Carlisle United.

Edmondson will be out to score in a third consecutive game when he takes on former club Northampton Town in next Tuesday's rearranged League Two fixture.

The summer signing from Leeds United has netted in United’s last two outings against Walsall and Sutton United, taking his tally to five for the season.

And manager Simpson believes the 21-year-old, who has four goals in his last six matches, is showing positive signs after a stop-start beginning to life at Brunton Park.

“I always knew if he got a sustained run in the team and could stay fit for long enough, he could get goals,” said Simpson.

“That’s why we brought him in in the summer. I think he’s starting to show that now.

“He had a tough time with the injury, then a silly sending-off [against Leyton Orient] which kept him out for a few games, and he said to me when he got injured that he wanted to make sure he was as fit as possible for when he got available again.

“He’s now in the side, getting his goals, and I still think there’s more to come from him.

“I want him to be more effective in games, more powerful in games, and a bit more physical than he's been.

“If we can get that into him I think we’ll have a real good striker on our hands.”

For Edmondson, next Tuesday's trip to Northampton will be a return to a club for whom he played 21 times in the 2020/21 season whilst on loan from Leeds, scoring twice.

Simpson does not believe facing an old club needs to be any sort of factor when the Blues play the Cobblers.

“It doesn’t worry me in the slightest. I don’t think it worries players,” Simpson.

“Sometimes I think when you go back [to an old club] quickly, if you go back within the first month of leaving, it can be a little bit tricky.

“But I don’t see that effecting anybody this weekend. It may affect [former Carlisle midfielder Jack] Sowerby for [Northampton] as well.

“But I don’t really mind. It’s a case of just getting on with the game.”
