Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford came to Harry Kane's defence as the England captain lay devastated following his World Cup penalty agony.

The former Carlisle United loan man moved to protect Kane from the scrutiny of television cameras soon after the quarter-final defeat to France.

A cameraman moved in to get a close-up shot of Kane as the striker was on his haunches disconsolate after his late penalty miss saw England go out of the tournament.

Pickford immediately turned and ushered the TV cameraman away.

He was seen waving his hands to guide the cameraman away from the scene, saying: "A bit of respect, please."

The Three Lions No1's actions were praised by fans and reporters on social media...

It came after England's 2-1 defeat to the reigning champions in Qatar.

Everton keeper Pickford - who played for Carlisle in 2014 - himself had come under scrutiny from Roy Keane in his analysis on ITV of France's first goal.

Aurelien Tchouameni beat the keeper with a shot from outside the box in the 17th minute.

Manchester United legend Keane said: "Brilliant strike, keeper could he do better? Yeah, I think so."

A Kane penalty brought England level only for Olivier Giroud to head France back in front.

A second England penalty, awarded after a VAR check, was then blazed over the bar by the skipper.
