Carlisle United's League Two rivals Crawley Town have confirmed the appointment of their new manager - and the departure of their ex-Blues trialist caretaker.

Matthew Etherington has taken charge at the division's 19th-placed club.

It follows the sacking of Kevin Betsy in October.

And the appointment has seen caretaker boss Lewis Young - a former Carlisle trialist - leave the club.

Etherington has left his role as Peterborough United's Under-23 boss to take the Crawley helm, with assistant Simon Davies following him from Posh.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United star, 41, is the latest appointment at the Sussex club by cryptocurrency owners WAGMI United.

He inherits a squad that includes former Carlisle loan striker Ashley Nadesan.

Crawley co-chairman Preston Johnson said: “Lewis Young served the club excellently and steadied the ship in what was a difficult time after we had to let go of Kevin Betsy and Dan Micciche, and I would personally like to thank him for his service.

"We are looking forward to building our relationship with both Matthew and Simon. We are very confident that they are the right candidates for the job.

"It was clear to us that the pair of them are data-driven in their approach, which is paramount for us and will be an even bigger focus for CTFC going forward.

"Matthew is somebody who is willing to take risks and play aggressively, and we are looking forward to watching him in action next Saturday against Swindon.”

Carlisle, who defeated Crawley 1-0 at Brunton Park in Betsy's first game on the opening day of the season, go to the Broadfield Stadium on February 25.
