It’s the FA Cup second round this weekend – and the potential prize hardly needs spelling out.
So in search of inspiration we’ve had a look on YouTube for some memorable Carlisle United moments at this stage of the famous competition in recent decades…
1988 – “You pillock”
Perhaps the most famous overheard outburst in United’s televisual history, as a Scarborough fan greets the own-goal by hapless Steve Richards which launched the struggling Blues into the third round – where they met Liverpool.
1994 – Currie too hot
Normally it’s an ex-player coming back to haunt Carlisle. This time, a former Darlington man accounted for the Quakers, as David Currie kept his composure to fire United to a second consecutive third round meeting with Sunderland.
1996 – Edmo cracks Quakers
Sorry, Darlo (not sorry)…here’s another memorable strike at the Warwick Road End – a second round header from Darren Edmondson that sent Carlisle on to a third round tie with Tranmere Rovers.
2009 – The Scorpion
Surely the most unorthodox second round goal in United’s FA Cup history. We’ve seen it a thousand times, but let’s watch it again: that moment of Vincent Pericard magic in the mist against Norwich City…
2013 – Berrett’s Brentford blast
The 2013/14 season wasn’t a happy one for Carlisle, but a cup run did lift some of the gloom – as did this James Berrett piledriver to help see off Brentford in the second round and clear a path to Sunderland.
2015 – Wyke’s Welling treble
There was poignancy in this afternoon of clinical finishing by Charlie Wyke at Park View Road, for it came on the weekend Cumbria had been submerged by Storm Desmond’s floods. Wyke’s second-round treble – the first hat-trick of his career – gave people back home something to smile about at a devastating time.
2019 – Hayden nails Nailsworth
The last time Carlisle reached the third round, they had Aaron Hayden to thank. Recently promoted to the side by Chris Beech, his first senior goal accounted for Forest Green Rovers in a replay, earning the Blues a trip to Cardiff City.
