An untimely injury thwarted Cumbrian badminton star Lauren Smith's bid for glory in the Dutch Open.

Smith and women's doubles partner Chloe Birch were 10-5 up in the first game of their final against Dutch duo Debora Jille and Cheryl Seinen.

But the Longtown ace then rolled her ankle and, after treatment on court, had to withdraw injured.

It left the English duo with silver and a frustrating end to what had until then been a positive tournament for Carlisle-born Smith.

Posting on Instagram, Smith said she was "gutted" at the outcome.

"Unfortunately after getting off to a good start I rolled my ankle at 10-5. The instant swelling made it clear I shouldn't carry on, even though every part of me wanted to!" she said.

"Now it's all about good recovery, find out what I've done and try get back on court ASAP!"

Smith, 31, also issued thanks for all the messages of support she has received since suffering the injury.
