Carlisle United striker Sam Fishburn relished a superb goal as he fired loan club Morpeth Town to victory.

The teenage Blues player volleyed home impressively to help the Northern Premier League Premier Division club to a 2-1 win over Stafford Rangers.

Fishburn’s effort was hailed as a “wonder goal” after an assist from former Carlisle midfielder Liam Noble.

It was his third goal since joining the Highwaymen and, in a club interview, Fishburn said: “It was a ball from Nobsa, floated in, and I knew I had to hit it because I didn’t have much time against those centre-halves – they’re big lads and straight at you.

“I tried to hit it and luckily it’s my day and it’s went in.”

Fishburn’s goal followed a Noble penalty as Morpeth went third in the table, ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Whitby Town.

Fishburn was one of just two of Carlisle’s five young loan players to taste action over the weekend.

The other was goalkeeper Lewis Boyd, who got his latest outing for Carlisle City in Northern League Division One.

The youth team keeper, who is on a work experience loan, made a number of saves for Jim Nichols’ side at Whickham.

He was eventually beaten by Scott Robson’s strike before Sam Atkinson earned City a point.

In Scottish League Two, Blues defender Max Kilsby was an unused sub as Annan Athletic drew 1-1 with Stranraer, ex-Carlisle man Josh Galloway getting the goal for Peter Murphy’s side at Galabank.

Winger Lewis Bell was not in action with Gretna 2008 not having a fixture – they return to action in the Scottish Cup against Drumchapel United next Saturday.

Gabe Breeze, meanwhile, was not in the Widnes squad as they lost 3-2 at home to Witton Albion in NPL West.

Widnes, despite signing the teenage keeper on a month’s loan in late September, have since brought in another keeper in Camery Terry.

Breeze was at Brunton Park on Saturday taking part in the warm-up ahead of the Doncaster game with fellow keepers Tomas Holy and Michael Kelly.
