Dean Henderson can bury the hatchet with Manchester United and eventually replace David De Gea as their No1.

So reckons TalkSport pundit Gabby Agbonlahor, who believes the Old Trafford club do not need to look past the Cumbrian as De Gea’s successor.

The Spanish No1 is out of contract at the end of this season.

Man Utd have been linked with other keepers such as Everton’s England No1 Jordan Pickford.

But former Aston Villa frontman Agbonlahor is backing Whitehaven star Henderson – currently on loan with Nottingham Forest – to step up.

That is despite a recent interview when the 25-year-old Cumbrian criticised Man Utd over his lack of opportunities last season.

“I just don’t see a lot of difference between Pickford and Henderson,” said Agbonlahor in an interview with Football Insider.

“Yes, Pickford is probably better with his feet but they’re very similar in terms of shot stopping.

“I just don’t think it makes sense for United to have another goalkeeper on their books.

“I know Henderson spoke out against the club, but I’m sure they can resolve that.

“I just don’t see Man United going out and spending big money on Pickford when they’ve got Henderson.

“He’s the perfect replacement for De Gea.”

Henderson is on a season-long loan with Nottingham Forest, and recently returned to the England squad for the first time in more than a year.

His long-term fate remains of interest to Carlisle United under the deal that took him from their academy to Man Utd in 2011.

United co-owner Steven Pattison told a fans’ forum this summer that the Blues would benefit more financially if Henderson got in the Man Utd team and stayed there over the coming years, rather than the Cumbrian being sold.

Henderson, meanwhile, remains an outsider to make the England squad for the World Cup, reckons former national team No1 David Seaman.

Pickford’s return from injury is likely to push the west Cumbrian down to fourth in the pecking order for the Qatar tournament, with Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope the other contenders.

“It’s a tough one, but looking at the experience everyone’s got, unfortunately I think Dean [Henderson] might miss out because he’s not made a lot of appearances for England,” Seaman said on Sky Sports.

“It’s his first season back in with Nottingham Forest, so I imagine he’ll be the one that misses out.

“Fingers crossed no one gets injured because you never know. There’s still a few months to go before the World Cup and you never know what might happen."

Henderson's latest outing came in Forest's 4-0 defeat at Leicester City on Monday.
