Paul Simpson hopes local lad Owen Moxon will feel the pressure lift now he has opened his Carlisle United account.

The talented Carlisle-born midfielder struck his first goal for his home-city club in last night’s 2-1 win at Grimsby Town.

It was a moment to remember for the Denton Holme player in his first season in the Football League.

And manager Simpson said Moxon, 24, had been putting pressure on himself to get his first goal at this level.

“I think he’s felt that bit of pressure, being a local lad,” Simpson said.

“He’s got an absolute desperate desire to do well here.

“He tries to do things properly in the way he lives his life, and he’s really professional about his work.

“I spoke to him about when he tried to bend one in the first couple of minutes at Newport. I said, ‘Just get your foot through it’.

“He said, ‘I know, I’m just trying to be a bit precise because I want that first goal, I’m desperate for it...'

“Hopefully that’s a huge relief for him now. And what a good finish as well.”

Moxon’s goal came in his 12th appearance since joining the Blues from Annan Athletic in the summer.

His effort was followed by Kristian Dennis’s eighth in 11 games this campaign.

“That was Denno being what Denno is,” Simpson said.

“He’s nicked it, reacted to a poor back pass and that’s what he does.

“It looks an easy finish but it’s not – he’s got to read it, take the right touch past the keeper and I was delighted to see it go over the line.”
