Cumbrian goalkeeper James Trafford has received an England Under-21 call-up.

The 19-year-old has been included in the squad for games against Italy and Germany.

It is a second call-up for the Manchester City keeper, who is on loan with Bolton Wanderers.

Trafford, from Greysouthen, is one of three keepers selected by head coach Lee Carsley for the games later this month.

It confirms the teenager's status as one of the brightest young keepers in the country.

Trafford earned his first Under-21 cap against Kosovo in July and the ex-Carlisle United academy player could now add to that.

England take on Italy on Thursday, September 22 in Pescara.

Five days later then face Germany at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane.

The games are part of the under-21s' preparation for next summer's European Championships in Romania and Georgia - with Trafford aiming to be involved in the tournament.

Carsley, speaking about the 25-man squad, said: "Many of these players report for England duty with a variety of experiences at club level under their belt from the opening weeks of this new season – be that a first loan move, a new manager or even a new country.

"I’m also conscious that some of these players have played a lot this season while, at the opposite end of the scale, there are others who need match minutes.”

Others in the squad include Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, Tottenham Hotspur's Djed Spence and Ryan Sessegnon, Liverpool's Harvey Elliott and Everton's Anthony Gordon.

Trafford's call-up comes a day after fellow Cumbrian Dean Henderson was recalled to the full England squad.

Meanwhile, Liam Delap, son of former Carlisle star Rory, is in the latest England Under-20s squad for games against Chile, Morocco and Australia.
