Cumbrian goalkeeping star Dean Henderson is hoping to return to the England squad for the first time in more than a year.

The Manchester United keeper, who is on loan at Nottingham Forest, could earn a recall to Gareth Southgate's squad today.

The national team boss is set to name his squad for this month's Nations League games with Germany.

An injury to Everton's former Carlisle United loan man Jordan Pickford is set to rule the regular No1 out of the games, which form England's last warm-up games before the Qatar World Cup.

Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale and Newcastle United's Nick Pope are expected to be selected - and Henderson will be a leading contender for the third goalkeeping position.

It follows his return to first-team football in the Premier League with newly-promoted Forest this season.

Henderson's outings for the City Ground club have included penalty saves from England stars Harry Kane and Declan Rice.

The 25-year-old from Whitehaven was last in the England squad at Euro 2020, before he had to pull out of the tournament through injury.

He was not named in subsequent national squads as he spent most of the 2021/22 season as second-choice to David de Gea at Old Trafford.

The former Carlisle United academy keeper has one full England cap, which he won against the Republic of Ireland in November 2020.

Southgate's squad announcement is expected at 2pm.
