Carlisle United boss Paul Simpson has hailed “low-maintenance” loanee Fin Back as the perfect example to other young players.

The Nottingham Forest player continued his excellent start to life with the Blues with a strong display at Mansfield Town last night.

And Simpson says Back has adapted so seamlessly to his role with United that he seldom needs to speak to him.

“He just gets on with it. He’s a good pro,” Simpson said of the 19-year-old.

“He is so low maintenance, it was funny today – I looked at him and thought, ‘I’ve never actually had a proper conversation with you over the last week or so’, because he just gets on and does it.

“I probably need to speak to him a little bit more just to encourage him.

“He’s one of those who just does his job week-in, week-out, consistently well.

“It shows he’s had a good upbringing and I’m so pleased we’ve got him with us.”

Back, who is on a season-long loan, put in a typically combative showing against experienced Mansfield opponents in Tuesday night’s 0-0 draw.

It was an eighth appearance of the season for the teenager, whose dad is England rugby union legend Neil Back.

Simpson said other aspiring players should watch the young wing-back and learn.

“Just a bit – without a doubt he’s a good example,” Simpson said.

“He’s somebody who young players should look at as an example of how to live your life, how to train.

“He [also] understands the difference between being sore and being injured, he doesn’t just duck out of things if he has a slight soreness, he gets on with it.

“I’m pleased with what he’s done for us.”

Back contributed to a strong overall defensive showing at Mansfield and Simpson said all the players in the rearguard could take credit.

“You can talk about Hunts [Paul Huntington], Morgan Feeney, Jon Mellish,” he said.

“The two wing-backs, Fin and Jack Armer were excellent.

“[Mansfield’s] Stephen McLaughlin and Jordan Bowery are as good a players as you’ll find in this league at that wing-back position.

“I thought our lads stuck to the task, competed well, won those aerial challenges.

“Fin was excellent, particularly at the start of the second half when Bowery went out there.

“I would have been so pleased to see that volley of Fin’s lob over the goalkeeper, but sadly it went straight at him.

“But there were a load of good things, and a clean sheet for us is really important for defenders.”
