Paul Simpson says Carlisle United must be wary of a new-manager bounce with their next league opponents.

League Two’s bottom side Rochdale visit Brunton Park on Saturday in new boss Jim Bentley’s first league game in charge.

The former Morecambe and AFC Fylde chief was appointed this week as Robbie Stockdale’s successor.

His first match saw Dale draw 3-3 with League One side Accrington Stanley on Tuesday before losing a penalty shoot-out in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Simpson said Carlisle’s bid to bounce back from their own Trophy loss to Manchester United’s Under-21s must take into account Bentley’s presence.

He has taken charge of a side who have taken just one point from their first six games of the season.

“We’ve got to make sure it’s a right positive mentality, it’s a roll your sleeves up job and you go about your business properly against Rochdale,” said Simpson, who started his own managerial career at Spotland.

“The likelihood is they will get a bit of a lift from having Jim Bentley in.

“They managed to score three goals on Tuesday, which they’ve not been doing particularly well so far.

“It’s going to be the same players who would have been playing without Jim Bentley, but maybe they might just get that bit of a lift, and we’ve got to make sure we’re able to match it and be even better.”

Bentley’s side could include former Carlisle loan midfielder Connor Malley, who recently joined the Spotland club on a short-term deal.

The former Middlesbrough man impressed in Bentley’s first game in charge in midweek.

Simpson, though, said the focus must be on his own side as they prepare for their third home game in eight days.

“It’s about us and about us learning from the things we’ve done so far. We’ve got to continue with momentum we got from last Saturday’s game [the 1-0 win over Gillingham] and maybe a little bit from the second half [against Man Utd U21s]  when we were on the front foot and being positive.”

Simpson is likely to bring Kristian Dennis, Jon Mellish, Tomas Holy, Fin Back, Callum Guy, Owen Moxon and Jack Armer back into his side, whilst also hoping Paul Huntington will be fit to start despite a knock to his calf.
