Paul Simpson says Carlisle United will need their “tin hats” today to cope with Stevenage’s attempted bombardment.

The Blues manager says maximum defensive resolve will be needed against Steve Evans’ side.

Two unbeaten League Two sides go head to head at the Lamex Stadium today (kick-off 3pm) with Carlisle aiming for their first away win of 2022/23.

And Simpson says his team must be under no illusions about the type of test they’ll face.

“This game will be a real test of our character, and what sort of personalities we’ve got in the group to be able to deal with a direct style of play which is really effective,” the Blues boss said.

“They [Stevenage] are good at it. Set plays, long throw-ins, corners, free-kicks…it might be a tin-hat job that we have to put on and defend for our lives, and hope the way we’re playing and creating chances comes to the front and we can be successful in that.”

Simpson will include new defensive loan signing Duncan Idehen in his squad this afternoon.

But the game may come too soon for Owen Moxon (thigh) and other players on the way back from injury.

Evans’ Stevenage have won three and drawn one in their own unbeaten league start.

Simpson’s side, having played one fewer game, have won one and drawn two.

On today’s opponents, the Blues manager added: “They’ve had a big change around of players. Steve threatened that at the end of last season and he’s certainly done it.

“From what I’m led to believe, they’ve had a bit injection of cash into the strengthening of the squad and they’ve signed some real experienced players.

“It’s going to be a tough test.”
