A Rubik’s Cube speed-solving competition has been held at Carlisle’s Crown and Mitre Hotel.

The competition, hosted by the UK Cube Association, saw 80 competitors go head-to-head as they solved the legendary puzzle.

Each competitor performed 5 solves per round, with an average being taken from their times to calculate their ranking in the competition.

Chris Mills, 20 from East Sussex, won the competition with an average solve time of just 7.05 seconds.

He said: “It was definitely quite intense at times, but I’m really pleased to have won a gold medal in the main event.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Carlisle and will be visiting again if another competition is hosted up north. Well done to everybody who participated!”

The world record for completing a traditional Rubik’s Cube was set by China’s Yusheng Du in a ridiculous 3.47 seconds.

The event was organised by Nevins Chan, 28, from Manchester and Aidan Blackett, 24, from Carlisle who said the event was a great success.

“It was an incredible feeling to see an event like this taking place in my home city’’ said Aidan. ‘’ It was unbelievable to see how far some people travelled for it – one cuber took 6 train journeys to get here!’’

“In total the competition attracted nearly 200 guests to Carlisle – a great boost for the local economy and businesses.”

Plans for next year’s event are already underway with the organisers very keen to make the event bigger and better than ever.
