Premier League loanee Fin Back is already exceeding expectations at Carlisle United, Paul Simpson admits.

The combative Nottingham Forest wing-back has impressed in his early outings on the right for the Blues.

And United manager Simpson is delighted with what he has seen so far from the 19-year-old.

Asked if Back had performed better than he had imagined, Simpson said: “Definitely.

“I knew from the conversations I had with him that he seemed a really good professional, and from my conversations with [Forest boss] Steve Cooper…he really likes him.

“He thinks he’s got a hell of a chance.

“It’s a massive one for us to get him in, really is.”

Back is getting a run of games in the right wing-back position and is set for another outing at Grimsby Town tonight.

“I’ll be so pleased when we get Joel Senior back into it [from injury] and we’ve got real competition for that right wing-back position,” Simpson added.

“Fin’s been excellent and hopefully he carries on that way.”

Simpson has been targeting the left side of United’s defence for further reinforcements.

But he has also saluted Jack Armer for the way he is going about things at left wing-back, while Back – son of England rugby union legend Neil Back – impresses on the right.

“The two wing-backs at the moment are putting in an incredible shift,” the manager said.

“Jack Armer looks a different player from last season, he’s been outstanding, and – Jesus – what a find Fin Back is, he’s been superb.

“I’d love to give them a chance to take a bit of pressure off them. Sadly at the moment we haven’t got any opportunity to do that – they’re going to have to keep putting a shift in, we’re going to work them and then wrap them up in cotton wool and send them out for the next one.”
