Cumbrians James Trafford and Kyle Dempsey have been praised for their strong start to the season in League One.

The Bolton Wanderers duo, from Greysouthen and Maryport respectively, have impressed for the third-tier side.

Teenage keeper Trafford kept a clean sheet against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday - while former Carlisle United midfielder Dempsey scored his first two goals for the club.

Trafford, 19, had earlier been named in the League One team of the week after an impressive opening-day display at Ipswich Town.

Bolton boss Ian Evatt said of England Under-21 international Trafford, who is on loan from Manchester City: “We know he is a very good goalkeeper and he has got a strong mentality and attitude.

"You are going to need to have if you have aspirations of playing for England and Manchester City, and that is where he is at at the moment.

"You have to be strong between the ears and he is a confident boy, there is no doubt about that. In terms of his improvement, we feel he can improve all areas of his game.

"It is the complete package we are after and we feel Traff has that," Evatt added to the Manchester Evening News about the former Carlisle academy youngster.

Dempsey, meanwhile, scored his first brace in a game since his Carlisle United days.

Not since the midfielder netted twice for the Blues against AFC Wimbledon in September 2014 had he scored twice in the same match.

Evatt described the 26-year-old Cumbrian as a "very good player" and Dempsey, speaking on the club website, added: "It’s probably one of the most enjoyable ones I’ve had in my career.

“I’ve had a bit of stop-start time here from when I joined in January. But like I said in pre-season, I felt the fittest I’ve been.

“Scoring goals and creating goals is something I want to get better at.

“I had a year at Gillingham where I sort of found myself again as that goalscoring creative midfielder and I felt like today it was glimpses of what I can do as that.

“I just need to continue doing what I’m doing in training, keep myself fit and hopefully it will be the start of many more to come.”

Dempsey's goals came three weeks after he was involved in an incident in home town Maryport which saw two people arrested.

Police said a 26-year-old man and 49-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage, and released on police bail. The names of those arrested have not been confirmed.
