Paul Simpson says he has the full backing of Carlisle United’s board to sign more players before the end of the transfer window.

And the Blues boss says head of recruitment Greg Abbott is working “tirelessly” to line up targets.

Simpson said he has been given assurances there is room in the budget to continue bolstering his squad.

The United boss has said he would like more defensive reinforcements before the summer transfer deadline.

“There’s nothing that I’m expecting to happen before Tuesday night [when Carlisle take on Shrewsbury Town in the Carabao Cup], but we’ll continue to look – and the directors are telling me that it’s ok to try and continue to recruit,” he said.

“We’ll do that. I’m certainly not going to be saving any money for a rainy day, because once we get to September 1 it doesn’t matter whether it’s raining or sunny, we can’t bring anybody else in.

“We’ve got to try and recruit a squad. That’s where Greg comes into it – he’s working tirelessly with all the rest of the staff to get more additions to come and give us a little bit of padding out to take us through to January.”

Simpson signed three players in the space of six days last week with Michael Kelly, Jayden Harris and Jack Stretton all coming in.

Kelly has been on the bench for United’s first two league games, while Harris and Stretton made their debuts as substitutes in the 1-1 draw at Colchester United.

Simpson says he is looking forward to the latter duo bedding in after their quick introduction to the side.

“It’s probably fair to say haven’t settled in fully yet,” the manager said.

“Jayden’s only been in a couple of days, Jack’s only done one session with us.

“I think once they get to the pace of it all they’ll be really good additions for us, and we’ve got to work with them and hope they work with us to get as much out of them as we possibly can.

“It’s a big step up to go from pre-season [and] National League football to this, and Jack hasn’t done a lot that’s like this through his pre-season.

“I think that over time they’ll benefit from the training that we’re doing and the games they’ll play.

“Things like this help them to get up to speed and ready to really have an impact.”
