Dean Henderson suffered defeat in his Premier League debut for Nottingham Forest.

The Cumbrian made his first top-flight outing in more than a year in their opening game at Newcastle United.

But goalkeeper Henderson was on the losing side as the Magpies won 2-0 at St James' Park.

The Whitehaven star was beaten by Fabian Schar and Callum Wilson as Eddie Howe's side struck two second-half goals on Saturday.

Henderson went straight into the side for the 2022/23 opener after his season-long loan move from Manchester United.

It came in the wake of an interview when the 25-year-old ex-Carlisle United academy player had criticised his treatment at Old Trafford last season.

Forest boss Steve Cooper, speaking ahead of their first game back in the Premier League, was not drawn on Henderson's comments in a TalkSport interview.

He said he could only praise Henderson for how he has acquitted himself since joining the City Ground club.

"I’m not going to make a comment about loan players' parent clubs unless it really affects us," Cooper said at a press conference, as reported by the Nottingham Post..

"I can only speak about Dean since he’s come through the door.

"First and foremost, it will be about how the season goes for him, how he plays and how we do as a team. So far, he’s been brilliant - he’s really embraced the football club.

"When I first met him, I was really impressed with how much he knew about the club and how much he wanted to come, so he’s been excellent so far."

Saturday's game was Henderson's first in the Premier League since May 2021.
