A defender understood to have been on trial with Carlisle United in pre-season has joined one of their League Two rivals.

Defender Richard Nartey has linked up with Salford City on a one-year deal.

Although United never commented on the identity of the player who featured in a friendly at Penrith, it was believed to be the 23-year-old former Chelsea and Burnley man.

He was not retained by Blues boss Paul Simpson, and after a trial at the Peninsula Stadium, has agreed terms with Salford.

“I’m really happy to just get it over the line - I’ve been here for a week and a half now so I’ve met the lads and everything already and after the first couple of days I knew that I wanted to be here," Nartey told Salford's website.

“As soon as I came here, met the lads, the philosophy and how the gaffer [Neil Wood] wants us to play, I think it just suited how I’ve grown up and I feel motivated that we can push and do really well this season."

United fielded three trialists in their first friendly of the summer at Penrith, with an attacker and goalkeeper also involved.

But the trio were soon released afterwards.
