Former Carlisle United star James Chester is the latest player to join new-look Derby County.

The defender has followed a glut of players in signing for the League One club after a recent takeover.

Chester, a loan favourite at Brunton Park in 2010, has signed a one-year deal at Pride Park.

It follows his departure from Stoke City.

Derby hope the 33-year-old's experience will help them rebuild in the third tier following last season's relegation.

There is fresh hope at Derby after the takeover by Clowes Developments, with Liam Rosenior taking interim charge after the departure of former boss Wayne Rooney.

Chester, speaking on Derby's website, said of the move: "It's taken a week or so to get to this point but when Liam rang me it was something I was immediately interested in.

"The club being in League One wasn't a thought that crossed my mind. I still believe I can play higher but the pull of Liam and the facilities and having the chance to play at such a nice stadium has far outweighed anyting else."

Chester was on loan at Carlisle from Manchester United in the 2010/11 season.

He made 24 appearances and scored four goals in a highly impressive spell.

He was then recalled by Man Utd and sold to Hull City midway through the season, and the Wales international has since played for West Bromwich Albion, Aston Villa and Stoke.
